Galp and Powin have begun the installation of a large-scale battery energy storage system in Alcoutim, southern Portugal.
The project focuses on a 5 MW/20 MWh storage system at the Galp solar park in Alcoutim. This capacity will allow solar energy to be stored during periods of high generation for later use during peak demand.
Four of the projects are located in Portugal and will add 60.5MW/120.4MWh of capacity near Galp’s Alcoutim solar farms. These are being partially funded through a €100 million Portuguese government scheme backed by the EU’s Recovery and Resilience framework. A fifth BESS, sized at 14MW/28MWh, will be built in Manzanares, Spain.
